For Glamour’s September issue, we photographed 54 incredible women across America and asked them to define themselves. The results were brilliant, funny, and inspiring—read them all here—and create a stunning portrait of what it is to be a woman in America today. (As our editor-in-chief puts it: “We’re all unicorns.”) Here, Dakota Fanning—who stars in the upcoming movies Brimstone and American Pastoral—talks growing up in the spotlight, her best advice, why it’s OK to be weird.
GLAMOUR: What does it mean to you to be an American woman in 2016?
DAKOTA FANNING: Well, I think that this is a really amazing time for women. Especially in the last year for me, I’ve really been celebrating the female relationships in my life. My best friends are the same friends I’ve had since I was 14 years old. I’m very proud to be a woman—you’re part of a tribe. Automatically, you feel connected to another woman when you meet them. That’s really special. And I’ve started to really realize and feel that. There’s just something you can relate to immediately, even without knowing a woman. It’s an inherent thing, an inherent connection. I’m really appreciating it and valuing that.
GLAMOUR: What’s your best advice for the women reading Glamour?
DF: I think that we have two things going on in the world right now. We have one sort of vibe that’s love who you are, be yourself, love your flaws, embrace your body, embrace your inner beauty, all of that. And then we have another very looks-based thing happening at the same time, you know? My advice would be to go with the “love who you are, embrace yourself” vibe that’s happening right now. It’s hard to remember when you look at a magazine or when you look at pictures of people, and you forget that those people are people like you. They have flaws and insecurities. That’s so easy to forget, even for me, as somebody who’s sometimes in those magazines.
GLAMOUR: You grew up in the spotlight. Do you have any advice for a young actress coming into herself?

Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut, American Pastoral, will open the 24th Hamburg International Film Festival on Sept. 29th.
McGregor stars in the drama, based on Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, as Seymour “Swede” Levov, a former star athlete now living the suburban dream in 1960s America. But his idyllic life is torn apart as the era’s social upheaval reaches his own family and his daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) joins a militant group. The resulting tragedy mirrors the impact of the decade on the entire country.
Jennifer Connelly co-stars as Levov’s wife Dawn.
McGregor and Connelly will attend Hamburg to present the film.
American Pastoral will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Lakeshore Entertainment production opens domestically Oct. 21 via Lionsgate. [Source]

Kirsten Dunst is set make her feature film directorial debut with The Bell Jar, an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s famed 1963 novel. Dakota Fanning has been set to play the lead role of Esther Greenwood in the pic, which Dunst has co-written with Nellie Kim. The Stanford Prison Experiment producer Priority Pictures optioned remake rights from Studio Canal, and production is eyed to start in first-quarter 2017.
Priority’s Lizzie Friedman, Karen Lauder and Greg Little will produce alongside Fanning and Echo Lake Entertainment’s Brittany Kahan. Celine Rattray is executive producing.
The Bell Jar is set in the 1950s and follows Greenwood, who takes an internship at a magazine in New York City and, after she returns home to Boston, begins to suffer from mental illness. A 1979 movie adaptation of the book was directed by Larry Peerce and starred Marilyn Hassett.
Dunst, just nominated for an Emmy for her work on FX’s Fargo, has directed a pair of short films: Welcome starring Winona Ryder and John Hawkes, which was screened at Sundance; and Bastard starring Brian Geraghty and Lukas Haas which screened at Tribeca and Cannes. Her recent film credits include Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special and she’s next up in Woodstock and Ted Melfi’s Hidden Figures. Dunst is repped by UTA and Management 360.
Fanning, whose recent credits include The Secret Life Of Bees and The Runaways, is next up in Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut American Pastoral. She’s repped by CAA and Echo Lake. [Source]
